Phytochemical Analysis and Free Radical Scavenging Efficacy of Novel Flavonoid Derivatives from Euphorbia neriifolia and Mentha spicata leaves

Background: Recent interest has focused on free radical chemistry. Due to endogenous activities, physiochemical circumstances, and pathologies, our bodies create reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and free radicals. When the body's free radical defenses fail, oxidative stress occurs. Free radicals destroy lipids, proteins, and DNA, causing many diseases. Thus, exogenous antioxidants can reduce oxidative damage. E. neriifolia is used as a laxative, purgative, rubefacient, carminative, expectorant, and to treat whooping cough, gonorrhoea, leprosy, asthma, dyspepsia, and jaundice. Mentha spicata, commonly known as Mentha viridis, is a Lamiaceae medicinal plant with antioxidant, anticancer, antiparasitic, antibacterial, and antidiabetic activities. Methodology: Extracts indicating the presence of flavonoids will undergo column chromatography for the further isolation of specific chemicals. The antioxidant capacity was further assessed using the DPPH test. Result: Findings indicated that the hydroalcoholic extracts from both plants contained the most distinct phytochemical substances. Among the evaluated substances, quercetin exhibited the greatest percentage of inhibition in both plant extracts relative to the standard. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that both plants are excellent sources of natural antioxidants and underscore the therapeutic significance of flavonoid molecules.
