Comparative Nutritional and Economic Evaluation of Corn-Soybean and Sorghum-Peanut-Soybean Base Mixes for Broiler Diets under Sudanese Conditions

The poultry industry in Sudan relies heavily on locally available alternatives such as sorghum and peanut meal, which offer potential cost advantages but are constrained by variability in nutrient composition, anti-nutritional factors and amino acid imbalances. This study aimed to conduct a comparative nutritional and economic evaluation of corn-soybean and sorghum-peanut-soybean base mixes for broiler diets under Sudanese conditions. Six broiler base mix scenarios were formulated using combinations of imported corn, local and imported sorghum, soybean meal, and peanut meal. All base mixes were standardized to contain 3200 kcal/kg metabolizable energy, 22% crude protein, and 1.00% digestible lysine through appropriate adjustment of ingredient inclusion rates, sunflower oil, and synthetic lysine. Local market prices and CIF import prices were used to estimate base mix costs, excluding fixed-cost additives to allow unbiased comparison. The results indicated that base mixes containing local sorghum partially or fully replacing imported corn significantly reduced base mix cost compared with the corn-soybean benchmark. Diets relying exclusively on sorghum and peanut meal required higher levels of lysine supplementation and energy correction, reducing their economic advantage. The lowest base mix cost was achieved when local sorghum was combined with moderate inclusion levels of both peanut meal and soybean meal, providing a balance between cost efficiency and nutritional adequacy. Importantly, the use of soybean meal may eliminate the need for imported protein concentrates commonly included at approximately 5% in Sudanese poultry feeds, thereby simplifying formulations and reducing overall import dependency. The study demonstrates that strategic partial substitution of imported ingredients with local sorghum, supported by limited soybean meal inclusion and amino acid correction, offer the most balanced approach in terms of nutritional adequacy, economic efficiency, and feed system sustainability in Sudan. These findings support policies that encourage both the rational importation of soybean meal and the long-term development of local soybean production and proper processing capacity to enhance feed security and sustainability.

The Protective Effects of Bacosides against Doxorubicin Induced Cardiomyopathy in Rats

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent known for its dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Cardiomyopathy induced by DOX is primarily mediated through oxidative stress and inflammation. Bacopa monnieri, a traditional medicinal herb, contains bacosides—saponin compounds known for their antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the cardioprotective potential of bacosides against DOX-induced cardiomyopathy in rats through biochemical and histopathological assessments. Methods: Rats were divided into three groups: a control group receiving normal saline, a DOX-treated group (2.5) mg/kg IP, and a group receiving both DOX and bacosides (200 mg/kg/day orally). Biochemical markers of cardiac injury (LDH, Troponin T, CRP) and histological changes in cardiac tissue were evaluated at the end of the treatment period. Results: DOX administration significantly elevated serum markers of cardiac injury and caused myocardial degeneration, necrosis, and inflammation. In contrast, rats co-treated with bacosides showed lower levels of LDH, Troponin T, and CRP, along with preserved myocardial architecture and reduced inflammatory infiltration. Conclusion: Bacosides exhibited a protective effect against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, likely due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These findings suggest that bacosides could be considered as a potential adjunct therapy to mitigate chemotherapy-associated cardiac damage.

Cost Comparison of Mineral Sources for Achieving Broiler Dietary Calcium and Phosphorus Requirements

Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are essential minerals in broiler nutrition, playing critical roles in skeletal development, metabolic functions, and growth performance. Feed formulators commonly use inorganic mineral sources such as monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP), and calcium carbonate supplied as limestone (LS). These sources differ in mineral concentration, bioavailability, and economic cost. This study compares three mineral supplementation strategies designed to achieve approximately 1.0% calcium and 0.55% phosphorus in broiler diets, assuming negligible contribution of Ca and P from other ingredients. Cost calculations were performed using ingredient prices expressed in Sudanese pounds (SDG/kg). Three mineral formulations were evaluated: (1) MCP as the primary phosphorus source; (2) a combination of MCP and DCP; and (3) DCP as the primary phosphorus source. The results demonstrate clear economic differences among mineral supplementation strategies, with the DCP-only formulation providing the lowest cost (175,900 SDG), followed by the MCP+DCP combination (195,220 SDG), and the MCP-only formulation (203,680 SDG). Relative to the DCP formulation, the MCP-only formulation increased cost by 15.8%, while the combination increased cost by 11.0%. However, the economic comparison alone does not fully represent nutritional value, as phosphorus bioavailability differs among sources. The study highlights the need for controlled feeding experiments to evaluate biological responses of broilers to different mineral sources before making practical formulation recommendations.

Economic and Nutritional Evaluation of Calcium and Phosphorus Sources in Layer and Breeder Diets under High Calcium Conditions

Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are critical minerals in layer and breeder nutrition, directly influencing eggshell quality, skeletal integrity, and reproductive performance. This study evaluates the economic and nutritional implications of using different inorganic phosphate sources, including Monocalcium Phosphate (MCP), Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP), and Calcium Carbonate (limestone), in diets formulated to contain approximately 4.4% Ca and 0.41–0.42% P. Three mineral supplementation strategies were compared: MCP + limestone, DCP + limestone, and a combined MCP + DCP + limestone system. Results showed that DCP-based formulations had the lowest direct cost, while MCP-based formulations had the highest. The combined MCP + DCP strategy provided an intermediate cost with improved phosphorus bioavailability. Economic evaluation demonstrated that the cost increase associated with MCP inclusion is minimal when expressed as a percentage of total feed cost (~0.3–0.8%) and can be offset by improvements in biological performance. The study highlights the importance of evaluating mineral sources based on available phosphorus, physiological efficiency, and production output, rather than cost alone.
